EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy
What is EMDR Therapy and How Does it Work?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a model that has been proven to be highly effective for those who have experienced a traumatic event. EMDR employs a body-based technique called bilateral stimulation, during which your therapist will guide you through eye movements, tones, or taps. This helps the painful and disturbing memory get ‘unstuck’ so the brain can process and store it properly, helping to reduce and eliminate trauma and PTSD-related symptoms.
How EMDR Counselling Can Help
EMDR can be helpful for acute trauma (resulting from a single incident), chronic trauma (repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse), and complex trauma (exposure to multiple traumatic events).
EMDR can feel awkward and weird at first, as it is different from ‘traditional’ talk-based therapy, and you might be thinking “am I doing this right?”- Don’t worry! Together we’ll sink into the EMDR process and yes – you are doing it right!
